Public Transport

All roads lead to Rome, as the saying goes.

By plane from Fiumicino and Ciampino Airport.
By train to Rome Termini. By taxi.
Rome’s metro system.

The city does have two major airports, the first and most important one being Leonardo da Vinci, or Fiumicino, Airport. Fiumicino is the airport where the big airlines land and depart from, while Ciampino, Rome’s second airport deals more with charter flights and low budget airlines.

The main railway station is Rome Termini, closest to the historical center of town and to most government buildings and major tourist attractions. Termini doubles as a huge shopping mall, two levels with as many shops crammed into them as possible. A huge bus square can be found in front of the main exit, while Rome’s two metro lines also meet each other in Rome Termini.

During daytime most trains leave from Termini, while at night, when Termini is closed, all trains pass through Rome’s second railway station, Tiburtina.

Both the Hostel Chaplin Bed and Breakfast Roma and the B&B Little Italy Hotel are near Rome Termini. This is convenient for tourists because not only does the bed and breakfasts’ central location make both accommodation options quicker to reach than most other hotels, but it becomes also far easier to visit the tourist sites, either on foot or by using public transportation. Staying in a hotel, hostel or bed and breakfast far from Rome Termini and from the center of Rome is not convenient for travelers: while from Termini most important tourist destinations can be reached fairly easily, Rome’s lack of an extensive metro system, combined with the city’s congested traffic (Bus travel is made extremely slow and uncomfortable, thanks to the number of cars and the fact that, once away from the center the roads become narrow and badly kept.), make it very difficult to reach downtown Rome from outside the center.
