Terracina

Terracina is a seaside village in the province of Frosinone in the regione Lazio. It is located between Roma and Naples.

In ancient Roman times Terracina was very important, since it was a major port along the Via Appia and there was also an important temple dedicated to Jupiter.

From Terracina’s harbor ferries depart for the Pontine islands.

Terracina tourist attractions:

  • Piazza del Municipio: The main square in the historical center of Terracina. Its stones came from the Roman Forum.
  • Museo Archeologico
  • Cathedral: This was built on top of a temple dedicated to Augustus. It is said that the stone basin in the portico was used for boiling Christians.
  • Museo Civico: Collection of ancient sculptures that were found in and around Terracina.
  • Temple of Jupiter Anxur: Only the vaulted base is left of this temple. Anxur refers to the name the Volsci had given the town.
  • Pisco Montano: A 36 meter deep cut in the rock below the temple, ordered by Trajan in order to facilitate the route of the Via Appia.

  • From Rome: Take a Co.Tra.L bus from the EUR Fermi metro station (line B). Quicker, but involving a change is to take the train from Roma Termini to Monte S. Biagio and the from there a Co.Tra.L bus.
