Rome’s public transportation system consists of metro, tram, bus and even some trains, which can all be used with the same tickets: 1 Euro for a normal ticket, 4 Euro for a day pass, 11 Euro for a 3 day tourist pass and 16 Euro for a weekly ticket. A monthly pass is 30 Euros and a yearly transportation ticket (Metrebus Card) costs 230 Euros.
There are 2 metro lines, A and B. These run between 5.30 AM and 11.30 PM (but on Fridays and Saturdays until 1.30 AM).
From midnight until 5.30 there are only night buses (27 different lines).
Metro Line A Information
Last year it was announced that until April 2012 metro line A would be running only until 9 PM, from that moment until midnight to be substituted by the bus lines MA1 and MA2. This was suspended before Christmas and from then on nobody seemed to be able to tell when this was going to happen again. It has now been announced that this moment has arrived. The mayor has wanted to wait until the start of the tourist season, probably because he wished to make sure that as many people as possible were affected by the problems. Starting April 10 2012, for 40 days, metro line A (except on Saturdays) will only run until 9 PM.
June 2012 price hike for Rome public transportation tickets
The price hike for Rome public transportation has been confirmed, From June 2012 onwards single tickets for Rome buses, metros and trams will cost 1,50 Euros instead of the present 1 Euro. This sounds like a huge increase, but it’s not so bad when considering that it is more than 10 years ago that prices were raised the last time. Also, compar it to most European capitols and Rome public transportation still turns out to be cheaper than in most other countries.
