Getting In

There are various ways in which a visitor can reach the Eternal City, but most tourists will arrive by plane, from one of the two airports of Rome.

The main international airport is called Leonardo Da Vinci, but is generally known as Fiumicino, after the city it is located in. Ciampino is Rome’s second airport and is especially used by the budget airline company RyanAir.

Driving a car to, and through, Rome can be a harrowing experience. Traffic is dense and everybody in Italy seems to have their own set of rules. Parking in the center of Rome can also be a problem. The most important rental car companies have offices at the airports and at Roma Termini (on the Via Giolitti side).

Rome has several railway stations, but the most important and central one is Roma Termini. Termini doubles as Rome’s main public transportation hub and it is not a coincidence therefore that the quarter around Termini is the one with the biggest concentration of cheap accommodation in Rome. Night trains mostly arrive at the Tiburtina railway station.

Tiburtina is also the station where a big part of the inter-local bus companies arrive and depart, as well as Eurolines, Europe’s biggest budget coach company, mostly used by backpackers.

Civitavecchia is Rome’s port. It is here that the cruise ships arrive. From Civitavecchia there are direct trains to Roma Termini.
