Getting Around

At the moment there are only 2 metro lines in Rome, line A (also called the red line) and line B (or blue line). In 2013 the third line, line C, is supposed to be up and running, two years later than originally planned. Not all important tourist destinations can therefore be reached by the metro.

The two lines cross at Roma Termini, the central railway station, where Piazza dei Cinquecento, Rome’s most important bus square, can also be found. From here you can take city buses in all directions.

Most tram lines are not important for tourists in Rome, since they mostly go towards the outskirts of the city, although right now the network is being enlarged slightly, to encompass, i.e. the Via Nazionale. The main tram hub is at Porta Maggiore.

There are some train lines that visit other stations in Rome beside Termini. Relatively important ones are Tiburtina, Ostiense, Trastevere and San Pietro.

Normal Rome public transport tickets cost 1 Euro and are valid for 75 minutes, a day pass costs 4 Euros, a 3-day pass 11 Euros and a weekly pass 16 Euros.

Taxis in Rome are supposed to be white and have a sign on the roof. Make sure that the meter is turned on. There are fixed rates for the airports of Ciampino and Fiumicino.

A separate page will deal with the latest public transportation news in Rome, and will include information about strikes.
