Markets

Every quarter in Rome has a weekday market, where it is possible to buy food, household articles and cheap clothes. Some of these markets have permanent stalls, but the smaller ones have to rebuild their stalls every day.

One of the biggest of these markets is the Piazza Vittorio market, which is not at Piazza Vittorio (Emanuele II) but in the Via Principe Amedeo and consists of two buildings, the first of which occupied by stalls selling cheap items of clothing and the second, more interesting, one selling food from all over the world, the Esquilino quarter where it is located being extremely multi-cultural.

The most well-known of these markets is the one in the Campo de’ Fiori, but that is mostly because of its picturesque location, the Campo de’ Fiori being one of Rome’s most beautiful piazze.

The Via Sannio market is also mentioned in most guidebooks. The permanent part of this market is covered, whereas the non-permanent stalls can be found in the streets around the main area.

Porta Portese takes place on Sunday mornings only and is Italy’s biggest flea market. It is held in the southern part of the Trastevere rione and can be divided into two parts. The northern part is very much like the Via Sannio, whereas the southern part has stalls selling everything from the smallest household goods to big wardrobes (that are not really as antique as the stall-holders will tell you). Beware of pickpockets!
