Drinking

Traditionally the oldest and most well-known pub quarter is Trastevere. Even in the past this was already the case. When it was decided to give each quarter of the city a fountain reflecting the character of that particular quarter Trastevere got one with a keg of wine attached to it.

Testaccio has only become popular in the past 10 years or so. Especially the part around the ex-Mattattoio (former Slaughterhouse) has become very trendy with a great number of clubs and discotheques.

San Lorenzo is the quarter near the University (La Sapienza) and has therfore become very popular with the student population of Rome. There are many restaurants and birrerie (pubs) and everything tends to be a lot cheaper than in the center of town.

Recently the area called Pigneto has become quite popular. Pigneto is fairly unusual in that there are relatively few apartment buildings, and more actual houses. Some trattorie have become quite popular and there are some streets with lots of bars, catering mostly to the more alternative crowd.
