Province of Frosinone

Frosinone is a province in the region of Lazio. It has about half a million inhabitants and its capital is the city of Frosinone. The northern part of  the privince is also known as Ciociaria.

Frosinone became a province in 1926, when territories belonging to both the regione’s Lazio and Campania were united.

There are traces of extremely early human life in the province. The oldest human skull (of the so-called Homo Cepranensis) ever found in Europe, 800,000 years old, was found here and can now be seen in the Prehistorical Museum of Pofi.

In the 10th and 9th centuries BC Indo-Europeans settles in the area, which till then had been occupied by the Pelasgic civilization. In the 7th century the Romans started being influential in the area (and called it Latium Adjectum, or Adjoined Lazio), but did not gain a real foothold till some 300 years later, after having beaten the Volsci and the Hernici.

In the middle ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire, the territory fell apart. Ciociaria came to belong to the Papal states, whereas the rest of what is now Frosinone was claimed by several other powers.

Frosinone consists of 91 municipalities (comuni, singular comune). In alphabetical order:
