The National Gallery of Modern Art (Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna) in Rome is one of several Italian museums dedicating an exhibition to the so-called Arte Povera (which translates as Poor Art) movement of the seventies.
The Arte Povera was particularly characterized by the use of simple materials.
The exhibition, which will last until March 4, 2012, was curated by the art critic Germano Celant, who was one of the driving forces behind the movement, especially thanks to two important exhibitions by him organized towards the end of the 1960′s.
The Arte Povera aimed to create an art form free of the constraints of material and manner. Its most famous artists are all present in the GNAM exhibition: Boetti, Fabro, Paolini, Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Kounelis, Zorio and Pino Pascali, who has an entire section of the show dedicated to his work. (Pistoletto only last year had an exhibition dedicated to his work in the MAXXI Museum in Rome.)
